About the Steinway Model A Piano

Designed by C.F. Theodore Steinway, the revolutionary Steinway Model A piano was introduced in 1878. It was the first piano to feature radial bracing and one-piece bent rim construction. These features resulted in many benefits, including the ability to use longer strings with higher tension that resulted in greater volume and sound projection akin to larger grand pianos.

The Steinway Model A piano was modified several times and created in varying sizes and scales through the years. Our 1908 Steinway Model A grand piano shown here is the version that was reintroduced in 1896 and sold until 1914. At 6′ 2″ long, it’s the same size as the Steinway Model A currently made in Steinway’s Hamburg facility.
